Luke 10:25 recounts a story of an "expert" who wanted to "justify himself." In response, Jesus (in a racially charged parable) defines "neighbor" in a way that I think you are likely to approve.
A historian friend once told me (for whatever late Medieval period we were discussing) that "it is true the Catholic church was a poor patron of the sciences, but one should recall that they were the only patron of the sciences." A wimpy argument, to be sure,
Many (not nearly enough) colonial and American Christians chose to follow Jesus' explicit teaching on "neighbor" when relating to Native peoples (as did and do many Native people). But even for many who did not,
"Bible used as a guidebook" strikes me as an overstatement. Things like Winthrop's infamous sermon (with its deliberate misquotes of the Bible) look a lot more like that self-justifying expert that Jesus feels needs some schooling.
But I'm less interested in keeping score between Christians who behaved badly (too many) and Christians who did not (not enough) than I am in pointing out a key difference between the two. There are those who follow the explicit teachings of Jesus (even if imperfectly) and those who are more into "Christendom," the latter being much more vulnerable to the "spirit of the age" which in our discussion is included colonialism.
